Conversation & Tour of Resilient Retreat
Our design for this non-profit organization focuses on three main aspects: 1. Creating a safe, secure place for its participants—all who have experienced some form of trauma in their lives. 2. Allowing for flexibility in the use of spaces by the participants and staff and 3. Utilizing the concept of Hygge to create a comfortable, warm aesthetic for all involved in the retreat.
The 85 acre conservation site provides an environment for contemplation, renewal, and therapy. The area designated for building is centrally located between an oak hammock with walking paths, equestrian runs and natural water features. The existing, 1/3 mile tree-lined entrance reminds visitors of old Florida but provides a sense of security and serenity upon arrival.
The project embraces the beautiful environment with three separate buildings wrapped by covered porches highlighting the Florida vernacular. This approach gives the organization operational flexibility, while creating in-between spaces used for gathering, therapy sessions, personal contemplation and passive cooling.
The fourth building, located on an existing barn concrete slab, houses three functions: An assembly area for events such as dance classes, yoga sessions and guest speakers; therapy rooms along the porch overlooking the hammock and the caretaker’s residence.
The residential accommodations offer different natural light options: Clerestory glazing for those who prefer less visibility and full height glazing for those who prefer exterior views. Porches are widened to provide additional gathering spaces while cozy niches give participants areas for contemplative reading and self-reflection. Railings are set back to allow for additional seating and vistas.
Though the initial design included us, the interior designer, the founder and the contractor, the organization’s ‘Voices’ committee provided valuable input throughout the process. These committee members, each personally impacted by trauma, helped shape and develop the architecture and interior design throughout the project.
Based on the Scandinavian word, “Hygge,” the interiors embraced its meaning of ‘tapping into a certain quality of coziness and comfort that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.’
The solution includes clean lines and the use of natural or natural-feeling materials like contract quality grass cloth and variations of wood species for interior architectural details, flooring, cabinetry and furniture. The Hygge color palette includes light, monochromatic, neutrals drawn from nature, combined with accents of color to differentiate commercial spaces. The furniture and décor used Scandinavian mid-century designs to create a residential feel.
"I just wanted to thank the entire team for all of your hard work on this project. From the bottom of my heart, we couldn't do it without you! This entire process has truly been a pleasure."
